DEC has announced that it is forging alliances with industry leaders to

DEC CEO Palmer told a group of analyst that his company will have to
ship 4 million to 5 million Alpha AXP devices a year to pay for its

SunGard, a disaster recovery vendor, has added support for Unix platforms.
Josh Dayanim, SunGard manager for midrange products portrays HP as
being the Unix Vendor with the greatest penetration into corporate sites,
estimating over 50,000 sites and says, "People are looking at HP as the
leader in Unix systems."

** HP ENHANCES TASK BROKER

HP has enhanced HP Task Broker, its distributed-processing software that
enables users to distribute applications transparently across a network of
multivendor systems. The new version provides a visual interface to the
command set and configuration information.

Novell is looking for partners in the Unix business. According to Gartner
Group, both IBM and HP have already made offers regarding Unix Systems
Laboratories, and one or both will take a significant ownership position in

HP unveiled a 486-based system designed specifically for users as a
Windows client in computing networks. The system will cost $895 and is
positioned midway between the cost of a full desktop computer and a low-
performance test terminal, a cost reduction made possible by the diskless
architecture of the unit with all applications and data residing on the server.

HP reached agreement with Sun on the terms under which it will license
the Wabi technology that enables users of Unix systems to run Microsoft
Windows 3.1 applications quickly and without modifications.

HP won a deal with Bell Canada to help develop a Unix-based network
management system for the Canadian telecommunications giant. The $1.5
million deal calls for HP's Professional Services Organization to develop

** IBM POSTS $8.04 BILLION 2ND-PERIOD LOSS, HALVES
DIVIDEND, PLANS 35,000 JOB CUTS
(WSJ, 7/28/93, pg. A3)
IBM took an $8.9 billion pretax charge and plans to cut 35,000 more
workers and shut buildings around the world. The firm also slashed its
dividend in half, its second cut this year, and posted a second-quarter loss
of $8.04 billion. Gerstner believes that the latest cuts are the last IBM will
need. The company's stock rose $3.25 to close at $45.625.

** IBM SERVER TO COMPETE AGAINST AS/400

IBM Co. officials promised to address shortfalls in IBM's server strategy by
the end of this year. The firm will offer multiprocessing PC servers that
will compete no-holds-barred against the AS/400.

CHARTING A MIDDLE COURSE

IBM's Gerstner appears to have a two-pronged strategy for reviving the
ailing computer giant. He is putting the brakes on decentralization, while
also encouraging an entrepreneurial spirit.

** IBM SHOWS NEW BOXES

Four of IBM's new RS/6000 boxes support Sun's 1152-by-900 color
displays as an option. The systems are meant to be sold into Sun accounts
as a replacement for SPARCstations. The RS/6000 model 230, 23T, 23W
and 23S are all desktop systems.

** IBM EXPANDS SUPPORT SERVICES

IBM has initiated a new RS/6000 leasing program for software application
developers. The program offers a one-year lease on RS/6000 models for a
monthly fee as low as 2 percent of the model's cost. At the end of the term,
a developer can renew the lease, purchase the system or return the system.
Up to 10 units per developer may be leased under the program.

IBM has apparently arranged to sell marketing right to COPICS its aging
mainframe based MRP software, to the AGS Information Services unit of
Nynex.

IBM has described a series of proprietary chipsets to implement
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) broadband switching that will be
incorporated into upcoming IBM hardware and sold on the semiconductor
merchant market.

IBM added the POWERstation/ POWERserver 34H, which offers up to 37
percent improved integer performance over current models in the 300
series. IBM also reduced prices up to 34 percent on a wide range of
RS/6000 hardware, memory cards, disk drives and media devices.

IBM introduced mouse and window support for the AS/400 with a
temporary fix to the OS/400 operating system.

IBM has denied that its mainframe Unix implementation - AIX/ESA -
which has approximately 200 users, is being killed off. However, IBM has
reduced the number of developers working on AIX/ESA.

The Federal Trade Commission will again consider an antitrust complaint
against Microsoft. If the commissioners have another stalemate, the file
could be closed, ending a two-and-a-half year investigation. If, however,
they recommend action, Microsoft could be fined and/or ordered to change
its business practices.

Pyramid has announced a corporate road map for enterprise client/sever
computing. The firm will develop over the next two or three years
massively scalable processing technology - multiple parallel systems
working together to boost overall performance rather than multiple
processors working in parallel. The goal is to double processing power
every 12 to 18 months.

SGI wants to play to a bigger audience then the "creative professionals". So
SGI unveiled its Indy workstation line, an attempt to bring its multimedia-
rich technology to commercial and corporate users. Priced at $4,995, Indy
incorporates a digital color video camera, 3-D graphics, imaging
capabilities, and its own user interface into a single package.

Kastner, of Aberdeen, says "Sun has done a marvelous job of packaging an
enormous amount of power into a very small box." Kastner adds that the
new SPARCserver 1000 will do particularly well in the commercial market.

Last March, SunSoft announced Solaris LIVE!. A new combination of end-
user productivity tools and multimedia application programming interfaces
(APIs) for audio, imaging and video.

SunSoft has introduced Interactive Unix System, version 4.0. Its new
features will increase system functionality, application compatibility and
peripheral support. Also, the product will run a number of SCO UNIX and
Open Desktop applications, giving users more than 5,000 software
packages.

SMCC formed an alliance with Teknekron Software System to bring open,
distributed-systems solutions to the manufacturing market. SunPro
software development business has entered into a development and
marketing agreement with Interactive Development Environments (IDE), a
Unix CASE tools vendor. Sun has formed a partnership with Tadpole to
provide customer board solutions.

** SUN TO DEBUT ITS FIRST X TERMINAL AS SPARCLASSIC X

Sun announced its first X terminal, the $2,545 Sparclassic X. Users will be
able to upgrade to a fully configured sparclassic workstation with extra
memory, hard disk and a Solaris object code license for $2,250.
